Disability Tennis
Our growing Disability Tennis Program caters primarily for young persons with learning disabilities. However, we have an open door policy where we adapt and cater for persons with varying disabilities. The current course runs alongside our mainstream Sutton Tennis School sessions on a Saturday afternoon thereby encouraging an inclusive environment.
Our Philosophy
Sutton Tennis Academy embraces inclusivity whilst making provisions for increasing disabled participation. We have a flexible approach in order to best meet the needs of our disabled customers. For example, although we offer a specific disability tennis course we find that some of our disabled players are best suited to a mainstream session.
Coaches
Two of our tennis coaches have completed the LTA Disability Awareness course and are therefore better equipped to teach disability groups or individuals. Head Disability Coach Andy Jeffrey finds coaching the disability tennis course “enjoyable but also rewarding to see the progress that the players make on the court but also in themselves in a relatively short space of time.”
Benefits
Our principal goal is to provide an opportunity for persons with disabilities to play tennis that they might not otherwise have. However, disability tennis has numerous coinciding benefits. We have seen in our current disabled players improvements in tennis ability and co-ordination but also confidence, self-esteem and concentration.
